Severe Weather Threat, Winter Makes a Quick Return
A strong storm system over the Central U.S. will be the main weather maker across the country over the next few days. Strong southerly flow ahead of this feature will advect increasing amounts of moisture northward in advance of a strong cold front. This is likely to result in numerous showers and thunderstorms breaking out from Louisiana to the Great Lakes for Monday and Tuesday, and severe weather and heavy rainfall are a distinct possibility with any thunderstorm complexes that develop. Showers and storms are expected to reach the East Coast by late Monday night and Tuesday as the cold front moves eastward. Another warm and breezy day is expected on Monday for the East Coast and Deep South.
A huge pattern change will be taking place across the eastern half of the U.S. as an impressive cold front sweeps across the region. A much colder Canadian air mass will follow immediately behind the front, bringing an abrupt drop in temperatures on Tuesday for the East Coast, perhaps on the order of 30 degrees colder. There may even be a band of snow behind the front over parts of the Ohio Valley and the central and northern Appalachians. Rare Clear Day Over the Kamchatka Peninsula
Usually shrouded in clouds and buffeted by cold Siberian winds, Russia\'s Kamchatka Peninsula is enjoying a sunny day as seen by the Suomi NPP satellite\'s VIIRS instrument. This image, taken around 0220Z on April 16, 2014, shows clearly the debris field created by the Peninsula\'s most active volcano, Karymsky.

South Korea\'s Southern Waters Seen in Suomi NPP Day/Night Band
Suomi NPP day/night band imagery taken April 1, 2014 on the left, and April 21, 2014 on the right, highlights the intense activities surrounding the Sewol Ferry incident off the southwest coast of South Korea. NASA\'s Blue Marble imagery is shown underneath the night lights for orientation.
Unlike a camera that captures a picture in one exposure, the day-night band produces an image by repeatedly scanning a scene and resolving it as millions of individual picture elements or pixels. The day-night band goes further, however, to ensure that each pixel collects the right amount of light. If a pixel is very bright, a low-gain mode prevents the pixel from oversaturating. If the pixel is very dark, the signal will be strongly amplified.

Earth Day 2014: Earth in True Color
Each day, Earth changes. Some changes, like clouds, are noticeable. Some changes are very subtle, like the color of the ocean or greenness of the grass. But each day the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) sensor on the Suomi NPP satellite is able to document these changes around the world in stunning detail.
Each day, NOAA View will update with the most recent global composite of VIIRS true color imagery.

2014地球日:真彩色地球

Enormous Sand Storm in China
This massive sand storm in northern China is affecting regions from the Taklimakan Desert in the west to the Gobi desert in the east,through Gansu Province and the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region.The city of Dunhuang experienced severely reduced visibility during this sand storm,the strongest to hit the region in 10 years according to the South China Morning Post.This image was taken by the Suomi NPP satellite\'s VIIRS instrument around 0645Z on April 23, 2014.

Severe Weather Possible in Mid-Atlantic on Friday, More Significant Risk Develops Over Central U.S. During Weekend
The NWS Storm Prediction Center is forecasting a risk of severe thunderstorms Friday afternoon and evening across parts of the mid-Atlantic, mainly across eastern North Carolina and Virginia. Damaging wind, large hail and a few tornadoes are possible. A more significant severe weather threat will develop over the Great Plains on Saturday and move eastward on Sunday to include the Arkansas/Louisiana/Texas region. Devastating Tornadoes Touch Down in Central U.S. States In chronological order, Nebraska, Iowa, Oklahoma, Kansas, Mississippi, Arkansas and Louisiana reported tornado sightings to the NOAA National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center on April 27, 2014. In Arkansas, the towns of Vilonia and Mayflower and the surrounding areas are reporting widespread devastation. This image was taken at 2345Z on April 27, 2014, around an hour before the tornado reports from Mayflower and Vilonia.
The NWS Storm Prediction Center is forecasting a widespread severe weather outbreak Monday afternoon, April 28, 2014, into Monday night across portions of the southern and eastern U.S. The greatest potential - where SPC has outlined a Moderate Risk - is across the lower Mississippi and Tennessee Valleys. Widespread severe storms - including strong tornadoes, damaging winds and very large hail are expected.

Satellites Monitoring Severe Weather in the Southeast U.S.
For the third day in a row, GOES-13 has been placed in Rapid Scan Operations to capture more frequent imagery in support of the outbreak of severe weather across the United States. NOAA is carefully monitoring conditions across the Southeast U.S. and into the Great Lakes regions. This image from GOES-13 was captured on April 29, 2014 at 19:55 UTC. A close-up of the overshooting cloud tops associated with the areas of highest convection and storm intensity can be seen here.

Massive Low Brings Flooding to Florida, East Coast
After spawning tornadoes and flash floods in the central and southern U.S., this gigantic low pressure system continues to draw moisture out of the Gulf of Mexico into Florida and up the eastern seaboard. Estimated Rainfall Maps show large accumulated rainfall totals in the Florida panhandle and along the eastern side of the Appalachian Mountains. Historic Flash Flood Event for the North Central Gulf Coast
A historic rainfall event developed ahead of a slow moving cold front on Tuesday evening, April 29, 2014, over portions of coastal Alabama and the western Florida Panhandle. The widespread flooding produced sinkholes (some very large and deep), cut roads in half and necessitated human water rescues. During the evening hours of Tuesday, April 29, over Mobile and Baldwin counties of Alabama and the western most three counties of the NW FL Panhandle, 10-15 inches of rain fell in an estimated 9 hours and caused disastrous flooding throughout southern Baldwin County of Alabama and Escambia, Santa Rosa and Okaloosa counties of the western Florida Panhandle. Pensacola Regional Airport recorded an estimated 15.55 inches of rain, their greatest calendar day total on record. The two day estimated total for Pensacola of 20.47 inches of rain lies between a 1 in 100 to 1 in 200 year event.
